Danny Castillon Doce’s ‘Colors of the South’ exhibition

May 15, 20241 Min Read

From the T’boli to the Manobo and Bagobo Tagabawa, Doce showcases Mindanaoan culture through his paintings

Through his Colors of the South exhibition, Danny Castillon Doce honours indigenous groups, religious beliefs, and traditional customs by celebrating the vibrancy and diversity of Mindanaoan culture. The exhibition features 17 watercolour renderings that capture the rich ethnography and unique experiences of Mindanao while also portraying the raw essence of the region’s people, nature, and culture. Colours of the South runs until May 31 at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Gallery.

More from Tatler: Kidlat Tahimik’s ‘Indio-Genius! Tatlong Alamat ng Tagumpay’ exhibition is on display at the UP Fine Arts Gallery

Hailing from the municipality of Surallah in South Cotabato, Doce found his passion in creating art to “glorify the Lord”. Though he is proficient in many mediums, such as paintings and murals, he opted to specialise in watercolour on paper nowadays. He has a sharp eye for detail and a knack for realism, which can be credited with taming this difficult medium. Doce’s signature theme revolves around the importance of heritage, the whimsical nature of everyday life, and the beauty of smiles.
