Art gallery in Germany fires employee for hanging his own artwork in exhibition

May 23, 20242 Mins Read

A German art gallery has fired one of its employees after he hung up one of his own artworks.

The 51-year-old employee at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich was found out on February 23, but the details were only made public this week, German media reported.

He pulled off the stunt in the hope of getting his own artwork noticed, local reports said.

The unnamed man hung his 60 by 120cm painting up in a gallery that he had access to outside of opening hours.

A gallery spokesperson said the artwork was not up for very long.

“The supervisors notice something like this immediately,” spokesperson Tine Nehler told the Süddeutsche Zeitung paper. The artwork was returned to the man and he was fired.

Munich Police was also said to be investigating the technical services team member for damage to a property over the two holes he drilled in the empty wall. The man was also banned from the gallery.

The Pinakothek der Moderne did not release any details on what the man’s painting looked like.

The gallery is one of the largest of modern art in Europe, featuring the works of famous artists such as Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí.

It comes after a member of the public put an extra painting on display in the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn in October.

“We think it’s funny and we want to get to know the artist. So get in touch! There’s no trouble. Word of honour,” the gallery posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The gallery said later that the artist had been in touch and was in contact with the gallery’s curator.
