Here’s what’s coming to the Vancouver Art Gallery this summer

June 6, 20242 Mins Read

Get ready for a season of thoughtful and immersive art at the Vancouver Art Gallery, which has just announced its summer exhibits.

Black and White and Everything In Between: A Monochrome Journey (opening June 9) will take visitors through over 100 different artworks showcasing the history of monochrome up until today’s modern approach. The art display spans genres, mediums, and themes, and also includes immersive scent- and sound-based experiences. Work from world-renowned artists, such as Andy Warhol and Anish Kapoor, will be shown alongside local artists, including Mina Totino and Liz Magor, throughout the exhibition—while local artist Khan Lee’s window project on the Georgia Street side will greet visitors and passersby.

This summer also marks the celebration of 15 years of Offsite, the public art program curated by the gallery. For the 2024-2025 season, the space will present three sculptures by New York-based Artist Hank Willis Thomas, whose work has been displayed around the globe and is a commentary on race, gender, and how they intersect in cultural stereotypes. This exhibit (opening June 6) will mark the first time all three of his stainless steel sculptures will be displayed together.

New for the 2024 summer season, 1:1 Artists Select (opening June 8) will see local artists go through the gallery archives to select a piece to be displayed next to their own work in a dynamic and purposeful juxtaposition for viewers. The pop-up project opens with work from Stan Douglas, followed by features throughout the season, including work from Jin-me Yoon and Douglas Coupland.

“This playful exhibition is the perfect way to move into summer at the gallery,” shares Anthony Kiendl, CEO and executive director, in a release. “We welcome thousands of visitors from all over the world— especially during summertime—and I am excited to see an impressive lineup of local, national, and international artists, exploring the depth and diversity of our collection.”
