Exhibitionism: Local gallery shows you need to see

Magic Shop Gallery & Studios

429 1st Street, Suites 260 and 155

This multi-member artists collective, operating in the Watershed Building in the Petaluma Warehouse district, has regular member shows in its downstairs gallery, and quarterly pop-up open studio events. Currently on display is “The Glove Project,” by Cat Alden and Michael B. Woolsey. It’s an artful photographic exhibition of work gloves, capturing the drama and commitment of hardworking people through the tears, stains and repairs of their gloves. Gallery Hours are Fridays and Saturdays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. MagicShopStudios.com.

Opening on June 22, with a reception from 4-7 p.m., in the main lobby of the WTRSHD, is “Essence of Place,” a display of art pieces created during, and in response to, a six week residency in a small town on the coast of Denmark. “Quiet days in the land of light opened up an expanded relationship to place and time,” explains Tatum. “I returned home to explore familiar trails through the burnt landscapes near Tahoe where the Caldor fire turned lush forests into spires of charcoal.”

Petaluma Arts Center

“The Art of Materials,” a new main gallery exhibition, brings together artists who are working with paper, fabric, industrial felt, metal, steel, cement, clay, plastic, cork and wood. The show runs through Saturday, June 22, with a large, free Open House from noon to 4 p.m. on the final day. 230 Lakeville St. Members and children free, non-members $5. 707-762-5600. Petaluma Historical Library & Museum

20 Fourth St.

The current exhibition at the museum, commemorating the 120th anniversary of the setting of the building’s cornerstone, includes photographs, documents and fascinating ephemera. It ends this weekend, running through June 16. Beginning July 5 is the acclaimed traveling show, “Her Side of the Story: Tales of California Pioneer Women.” Petaluma Historical Library and Museum, 20 Fourth Street. Petalumamuseum.com

Petaluma Tea & Coffee

Petaluma Tea & Coffee presents “A Collection of Words,” a small exhibition of poetry, with collage art by local artist K.H.. The Cafe is open Monday-Saturday 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. PetalumaCoffee.com.

Slough City Studios

409 Petaluma Boulevard South, Suite C

Slough City’s new group show, titled “Liberation,” is collection of queer prints curated by Amaya Lounibos, specifically for pride month. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Sloughcity.com.

Usher Gallery

1 Petaluma Blvd. N.

Lulu Smith and Sophia Lavrov are the featured artists in Usher’s current exhibition “Family & Friends: A visual Exploration.” There will be a closing reception on Sunday, June 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. VibeGalleryPetaluma.com.
