The many layers of the mind, body, and beyond are showcased in a series of collages by artist James Stephen Terrell.
The works are part of an exhibition titled “Inside Out” at the Hamilton Arts Collective | Hamilton Gallery.
Reminiscent of stained-glass windows, Terrell’s collages combine fabric, paint, and paper for an otherworldly experience.
“The collages in this series are portals that propel and transcend the viewer to an otherworldly, ethereal, heavenly, magical, mystical, supernatural existence” reads a press release. “When it comes to our soul, we are so much more than flesh, blood, and bone. We are celestial and intangible beings simultaneously existing on this planet and in regions beyond the earth.”
A native of Washington, D.C., Terrell has exhibited his artwork throughout the country, including multiple solo shows at museums.
Terrell incorporates “the principles of vibration and movement of opt art as displayed by artist Bridget Riley and Victor Vasarely” as well as the color blocking technique of Josef Albers and Johannes Itten, according to the press release.
The opening reception will take place on July 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. There will also be an artist reception on July 21 and Aug. 18, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. both days; as well as a First Saturday reception on Aug. 3 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The Hamilton Gallery is open Fridays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
