Cadogan Gallery opened their first gallery in London in 1980. Over four decades later, the gallery will expand its presence in the city with a new flagship space in Belgravia.

The gallery’s space, located at 7-9 Harriet Street (on the corner of Harriet Walk and Harriet Street), will be designed by Studio Jake Lai following a total renovation.

One of London’s longest-standing contemporary art galleries,  Cadogan Gallery has continued to champion a diverse array of artists, both established and emerging. The new London space and their recently opened Milan gallery is the progression of years’ of work but also signals an ambitious future as the gallery grows in synergy alongside its artists, amplifying in scale and scope.

Jake Lai is working with Cadogan Gallery on an elegant design that prioritises artists’ needs and encourages more pioneering projects, while also preserving its identity. The gallery will occupy over 400 square metres over two floors, with the main exhibition space complemented by a further gallery space downstairs, allowing for simultaneous programming. A viewing room and open-plan offices will also be in the building.

Coinciding with Frieze London, the inaugural exhibition will present, Cadogan Gallery, A Group Exhibition, with new works by Elise Ansel, Kim Bartelt, Lawrence Calver, Lorenzo Brinati, Gabriele Cappelli, Edoardo Dionea Cicconi, Andreas Diaz Andersson, Ramón Enrich, Richard Hearns, Terrell James, Mimi Jung, Tycjan Knut, Laurence Leenaert, Sam Lock, Nuria Maria, Theo Pinto, Emanuel Seitz, Deborah Tarr, Leonardo Anker Vandal, Richard Zinon, and Maximilian Verhas. Unified by the artist-centred ethos and distinctive aesthetic, this group exhibition epitomises the gallery’s growth, marking a poignant moment to showcase the evolution of artists since the gallery’s founding, alongside a new generation of artists.

Our new flagship space embodies our commitment to our artists, to provide an innovative platform to showcase their work. The enhanced capabilities of this space allow us to push the boundaries of artistic presentation and engagement. It is paramount for the gallery to evolve in harmony with the artists we represent, reflecting and amplifying their energy and creative output.

Moreover, we are immensely proud of the artists who have flourished with us throughout the years. This new chapter marks a significant milestone in our shared journey, and I am delighted that we are advancing the future of the gallery together, continuing to foster and celebrate the creative excellence that defines us.

Freddie Burness, Managing Director of Cadogan Gallery

Christopher Burness, the founder of our gallery, grew up in the heart of the community, in Cadogan Square. Cadogan Gallery is intrinsically linked to this heritage, forming an essential part of its identity. London is a city that thrives on its rich artistic history and its ever-evolving contemporary scene. Being part of this community is incredibly inspiring and we look forward to moving into a new space that builds on our long-established roots, as well as evolving within the vibrant cultural scenes of Belgravia and Knightsbridge.

Katie Burness, London Gallery Director

About

Cadogan Gallery is a contemporary art gallery based in London and Milan. For over four decades our mission has been to champion a diverse roster of emerging and established artists. We care deeply about longevity, developing the careers of our artists and the journey of our collectors with a focus on fostering enduring connections.

Founded in 1980, we have operated in Belgravia and, more recently, Chelsea for over forty years. In 2023 we expanded our reach, with a new space in Milan; enriching our exhibitions programme and promoting our relationships with national and international artists, galleries and collectors.

Our decision to return to Belgravia with a new ambitious space in 2024, epitomises the gallery’s evolution, marking a poignant moment to showcase the evolution of artists that have worked with us since the gallery’s founding, alongside a new generation of artists, all unified by our distinctive aesthetic and artist-centred ethos. Led by senior director Freddie Burness, and building on the strong foundations and reputation laid by his father Christopher Burness, the gallery programme focuses on contemporary abstract art, maintaining a strong identity outside of market trends.

Freddie Burness (b. 1990, London) is the managing director of Cadogan Gallery. Growing up between the UK, Sweden and Germany, he now lives and works in Milan, Italy.

Since becoming Director in 2018 alongside his father Christopher Burness, Freddie has pushed forward the exhibition programme to include young and established internationally recognised artists alongside a strong program of emerging talents. He has worked to expand the outreach of the gallery, both locally and overseas, recently launching exhibition spaces in Hampshire, Milan and now overseeing the opening of the new space in London.

A fascination for abstraction has led his academic journey from German Expressionism and Der Blaue Reiter to Abstract Expressionism and the Light and Space movement, with particular interest in the abstract works of Japan’s Gutai movement, championed notably by Axel Vervoordt. These influences shape the aesthetic identity crafted for the gallery and guiding its future direction and gallery program, has expanded to include prominent artists such as Sam Lock, Richard Zinon, Nuria Maria, and Emmanuel Seitz  among others.

Katie Burness (b. 1992, London) is the director of Cadogan Gallery in London, a role she has held since 2019. Since assuming this position, Katie has played a pivotal role in shaping the gallery’s strategic direction and enhancing its visibility in the London art scene.

Working closely with her brother Freddie Burness and her father Christopher Burness, Katie has leveraged and spearheaded the gallery’s online presence. This digital transformation has included the development of the website and the integration of social media platforms to engage a broader audience and attract new international collectors and art enthusiasts.

Katie’s leadership has been instrumental in managing and executing key projects for the gallery, including overseeing the project management and the ambitious launch of Cadogan’s new locations in Milan and London.
