Ferens 2024 exhibitions in Hull celebrate the work of talented artists

June 29, 20242 Mins Read

Two exhibitions celebrating the talent of artists – many of them local to Hull and East Yorkshire – have opened at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull, alongside an artwork created by the gallery’s latest artist in residence.

The annual Open Exhibition features over 300 artworks, ranging from paintings to film, all produced by amateur and professional artists, many of which are from the local area. Some of the artworks are for sale, giving visitors the opportunity to buy and own a unique piece of art.

The Open artworks were chosen by a panel of specialist judges – Jemisha Maadhavji, artist; Sarah Pennington, artist and director of Hull Artist Research Initiative and Hannah Willetts, curator of Beverley Art Gallery – and the exhibition is taking place at the same time as the Young Artist Open Exhibition, which is for budding artists aged 15 and under.

This year the gallery is celebrating 20 years of the Young Artist competition. With artworks submitted by individuals, schools, and local community groups, this exhibition offers prizes in three age categories, sponsored by the Friends of the Ferens and the Hull and East Riding branch of The Arts Society.

A special 20th Anniversary Prize has also been awarded this year, to Andrei Hritcu, 14, of Hull. Artist in residence Sam Larter has her artwork, “An intersection of angles”, on display in Gallery Two.

Kerri Offord, curator of art at Ferens Art Gallery, said: “We have had an outstanding number of entrants to both the Open and Young Artists Open exhibitions this year. It is fantastic to have so many young entrants showing their work at the Ferens.”

Hull Live photographer Donna Clifford captured these images at a special preview of both the Open and Young Artist exhibitions.
