Archmist to transform Seoul’s Jamsu Bridge into art gallery

Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced Archmist as the winner of redesigning the iconic Jamsu Bridge, an initiative under the ‘Great Hangang Project (Han River Renaissance 2.0). This bridge was built in 1976, just lying above the waterline, will be reimagined to transform into a pedestrian-friendly bridge housing the world’s longest gallery, making it a sustainable and cultural landmark along the Han River.

‘We are determined to create a ‘bridge of culture’ that citizens can enjoy,’ said Chang-soo Lim, Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Future Space Planning Officer. ‘It will also be the first pedestrian bridge and waterfront cultural space over the Han River.’

This unique double-decker city landmark spans 795 meters, the shortest among the other bridges. Banpo Bridge is above it, connecting Yongsan and Seocho Districts.

The design proposal features a curvy waterfront boundary that will maximize the water interface, making it an ideal spot for leisure activities. Floating planters and the inclusion of native flora in the project hope to improve the biodiversity and microclimate, creating a welcoming space for all visitors.

The current Jamsu bridge is a 2-way vehicular bridge that will be transformed into a permanent and temporary art gallery, exhibition space, a versatile cultural venue for local markets, runaway shows, movie theatres, and other special events. The design will also incorporate the famous Banpo Bridge water fountain (Moonlight Rainbow Fountain) into the experience without disturbing the pedestrian traffic.

The vibrant color scheme chosen for this redesign is one of the key elements of the project. This creates a welcoming and dynamic experience for the pedestrians, reflecting the vibrancy of the bustling city of Seoul. The pink color used in the design was deeply appreciated by the jurors, who brought life to the project. Regarding this, Ningzhu Wang, Lead Designer of Arch Mist, has stated: “The infusion of color not only enhances the bridge’s aesthetics but also reflects the vibrancy and positivity of the city.”

During the heavy monsoon season in Seoul (July-September), the bridge becomes fully submerged and is generally closed off due to increased water levels. Archmist has considered this when proposing pedestrian-friendly decks and facilities. The cycling track is redesigned to follow a lower deck profile, providing a safe experience.

“The coloration and the dynamic design will be a unique characteristic of the submarine bridge and will serve as a landmark.”

Modular elements, which will require minimum maintenance, are being used for the construction. The decks and balconies will be anchored to existing piers and suspended via cables to ensure a safe load transition.

The transformation of Jamsu Bridge will begin soon, with an expected opening for visitors in 2026. The aim is to transform the current bridge into a future-proof cultural and social melting pot along the historic Han River.
