Santa Ysabel Art Gallery Announces New Installment for Kids’ Mural Project

On Aug. 8 and 10, Santa Ysabel Art Gallery will be presenting the second installment of the Santa Ysabel Mural Project, a collaborative mural project for young artists.

From 11 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the 8th and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., students will be supplied art materials to help create a nature-themed mural that will remain on display at the gallery for visitors to enjoy.

On Aug. 8, approximately 12 to 16 students ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade from Spenser Valley Jump Start, a summer school program at Spenser Valley School District, will be given guidance by local artists Annie Dover, who specializes in oil painting, and Anastasia Castle, who has worked on various drawings, paintings, and X-stitches, on the project, in addition to this project.

On Aug. 10, children from across the region are invited to join the continuation of the mural. This open session offers more young artists the opportunity to leave their mark on the mural. Under the supervision of the camp director Karla Willis, these young artists are encouraged to take their vision for a mural and project it onto a large-scale of work.

The first installment–a design of a local Red Tail hawk–of the mural project was created by Castle, as well as visiting children and artists, during the Santa Ysabel ART Festival on May 18 and 19. The ongoing mural was painted and displayed over the months of May and June 2024, with the final product being presented on June 15, on the property of the Santa Ysabel and Garage Galleries over the months of May and June.

Having operated for over three decades, Santa Ysabel Art Gallery has a long-standing commitment to showcasing and promoting the work of regional artists in painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, and mixed media. The gallery’s mural project highlights regional California landscape painting and painters while also providing a platform and creative outlet for young artists.
