Two exhibitions open in JDAC galleries

Two exhibitions are currently on view in the Hastings College Jackson Dinsdale Art Center galleries. The first, the thesis show “Creatures of Legend” by Liz Murray, is open through August 30, and the second, a show by Concordia University faculty, is open through September 26.

A wide shot of the JDAC art galleryA wide shot of the JDAC art gallery“Creatures of Legend” is in the east gallery and consists of printed engravings of various animal species around the world. Each print is tied to the individual mythologies of different ancient cultures. Murray, who is from Elm Creek, Nebraska, will give a lecture on her show in the JDAC Room 101 on Friday, August 30 at 4:00 p.m., with a reception to follow.

The “Concordia University Faculty Exhibition,” which is in the west gallery, includes works by Donald Robson, James Bockelman, Jennifer Bockelman, Seth Boggs and Justin Groth. A reception for this show is Friday, September 6 at 6:00 p.m.

The JDAC galleries, located at 700 E. 12th Street in Hastings, are open from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The galleries, lectures and receptions are free and open to the public.

Artist Bios

Don Robson is a professor of art and chair of the Art Department. He holds his Master of Fine Arts degree from Wichita State University and a Master of Teaching from the University of Central Missouri. Robson is an accomplished and published artist who has exhibited work in juried competitions, solo and group shows and has work in galleries, museums and private collections across the country.

James Bockelman is a professor of art where he also serves as curator of the Marxhausen Gallery of Art. He earned an MFA in painting from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 1997. Bockelman’s artwork has been exhibited in galleries in the United States as well as in countries across the world.

Jennifer Bockelman addresses themes of power and cultural identity as filtered through language. Bockelman received an MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder in sculpture. Her artwork has been shown internationally and nationally.

Seth Boggs, professor of art, teaches graphic design, illustration and printmaking. Boggs earned his MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University. Recently Boggs has been focusing his time outside of class on large scale mural projects throughout Nebraska

Justin Groth is an assistant professor of art. He graduated with his MFA in ceramics in 2016 from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He received a BFA in Art Education from Concordia University in Nebraska in 2011. He has shown work in the NCECA Annual as well as the Gyeonggi International Ceramic Biennale.
