Those who invested in MBSB Berhad (KLSE:MBSB) three years ago are up 48%

October 10, 20244 Mins Read

By buying an index fund, you can roughly match the market return with ease. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, MBSB Berhad (KLSE:MBSB) shareholders have seen the share price rise 18% over three years, well in excess of the market return (3.0%, not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven’t been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 2.7% in the last year, including dividends.

So let’s investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business’ progress.

View our latest analysis for MBSB Berhad

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it’s a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company’s share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the three years of share price growth, MBSB Berhad actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) drop 22% per year.

So we doubt that the market is looking to EPS for its main judge of the company’s value. Since the change in EPS doesn’t seem to correlate with the change in share price, it’s worth taking a look at other metrics.

Interestingly, the dividend has increased over time; so that may have given the share price a boost. Sometimes yield-chasing investors will flock to a company if they think the dividend can grow over time.

The company’s revenue and earnings (over time) are depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. As it happens, MBSB Berhad’s TSR for the last 3 years was 48%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

MBSB Berhad shareholders gained a total return of 2.7% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. On the bright side, the longer term returns (running at about 5% a year, over half a decade) look better. It’s quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we’ve identified 1 warning sign for MBSB Berhad that you should be aware of.
