Water main break hits Tremont Street again, soaking art gallery

Friday’s water main break flooded the Piano Craft Gallery and caused a nearby road closure through rush hour.

A water main break on Tremont Street near Massachusetts Avenue caused flooding Friday, less than two weeks after a similar incident sent water gushing in the same area.

According to the Boston Water and Sewer Commission (BWSC), the water main break happened at 793 Tremont St., which is the location of the Piano Craft Gallery. The flooding caused a road closure, with outbound traffic affected through rush hour, the BWSC said.

The water main break sent water flowing into the Piano Craft Gallery, according to Boston 25 News.

“They had some pretty good flooding in their basement there. We were able to… secure the water and we were able to mitigate the water damage to the basement and secure the electrical,” Boston Fire Captain Michael Feeney told the outlet.

It was the second time in 10 days a water main broke in the area. Around 5 a.m. on Oct. 1, a 20-inch water main break flooded Tremont Street near Massachusetts Avenue, causing “significant road damage” and a sinkhole that swallowed the back end of a vehicle.

Piano Craft Gallery President Erik Grau expressed frustration to Boston 25 News, calling the incident “totally unacceptable.”

“The city was out here all last week fixing this issue. For it to happen again, only worse this time, is unbelievable,” Grau told the outlet.

The source of Friday’s water main break is under investigation. No injuries were reported.
