Leonor R. Fuller Gallery to host 16th Annual Native American Art Exhibition with guest curator

October 15, 20241 Min Read

By P. Jade Asumbrado

Anticipate the 16th Annual Native American Art Exhibition from November 4 to December 13 at the Leonor R. Fuller Gallery. The opening reception will be held on Friday, November 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The exhibit, curated by Mikaela Shafer and titled “Honoring Ancestors and Embracing Our Culture in the Modern World,” is coming to the gallery. It poses a thought-provoking question to both artists and viewers: “How can we lovingly honor our ancestors, heal generational traumas, and preserve culture in the modern world?”

The exhibit honors the art and culture of the locality’s Native community members.

More information is available on the college’s Leonor R. Fuller Gallery page.

About the guest curator

The gallery’s press release described Mikaela Shafer as an Indigenous mother, interdisciplinary artist, and writer living in Olympia.

Since childhood, Shafer has experience as a costume designer, sculpture writer, and painter.

“Her writing and community-building work led to her being named one of Northern Utah’s women who have influenced the history and development of education of the community, bringing the area forward for the next generation,” the press release stated.
