Tottenham have got to invest in their squad this summer after qualifying for the Champions League.

That is the view of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who exclusively told Football Insider that Spurs will receive €100million (£87m) from European competition alone this season.

Tottenham find themselves in the unique position of having a squad that finished one spot above the relegation zone last season, but are entering Europe’s premier club competition.

As a consequence, Spurs have been afforded the opportunity to overhaul their squad, thanks to the financial windfall provided by Champions League revenue.

Tottenham have wasted little time in splashing out this summer, signing Mohammed Kudus, Kota Takai, and Mathys Tel.

The North London club also bid £60m for Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White, but after threats of legal action, the England international has agreed a new contract with the Midlands club.

Tottenham can lose £200m

Having spent the best part of £120m [transfermarkt] this summer, which will rise to £180m if the deal for Zabarnyi is completed, the question of how much more the club can spend this summer is an intriguing one.

Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg’s permanent move to Marseille is the only departure so far for a fee, with the Danish midfielder heading to France for around £17m [BBC Sport].

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Plumley, a senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, explained that the club could afford to make a splash this year, thanks to Champions League and Premier League revenue, as well as their strong standing with PSR, allowing for losses of around £200m [football.london].

He said: “A few factors to consider. If we look at the numbers we can see, we’re looking 2024’s numbers on PSR cycles, and from the outside looking in, and not a case of how much they can spend, but how much could they have lost and still been compliant, they could have lost around £200m in the 2024 window and still been compliant with PSR.

“If you roll that forward, going into the season we’re about to start, you’ve got Champions League revenue, which is going to be at least €100m (£87m) for an English club.

“You’ve still got Premier League TV money which is year on year and they’re an established Premier League club.

“Their match day revenue has gone up because of the new stadium in recent years so financially they’ve always seemed absolutely fine.

“It’s one of those again where it’s how much do they want to spend, and I think with this one, getting into the Champions League is huge within this context because that’s going to mean that you can go and invest in your squad, and you’ve got to because that’s the elite competition in Europe.”

Mikey Moore left out of pre-season squad

Mikey Moore looks set to depart Tottenham this summer after being left out of the club’s squad for their pre-season tour of Asia.

The young winger is expected to depart on loan in a bid to secure more first-team minutes to aid his development.

Also absent from the squad are Dane Scarlett and Alfie Devine, with the trio of youngsters being afforded the opportunity to seek loan moves away from the club.
