Last chance to see Brecknock Art Trust Exhibition at y Gaer

September 10, 20252 Mins Read

Art lovers have just days left to visit a major exhibition celebrating 25 years of collecting by the Brecknock Art Trust at y Gaer Museum, Art Gallery & Library in Brecon.

The show, which closes on Sunday, September 14, features more than 100 works reflecting the society, culture, and landscapes of Brecknockshire.

Curated by David Moore, the exhibition is arranged both geographically and thematically across two galleries. It includes around 70 artists, ranging from historical figures like Sir Richard Colt Hoare and Thomas Hornor to modern and contemporary creators. Highlights include Josef Herman’s depictions of industrial communities, livestock-themed works by Iwan Bala, Radovan Kraguly, and Sally Matthews, and a striking abstract oil painting by John Uzzell Edwards fusing Celtic imagery with jazz influences. Folk tales and regional life are explored through pieces by Ivor Davies, Mary Lloyd Jones, David Jones, Shirley Jones, and Eric Ravilious.

Since opening in February, the exhibition has attracted large numbers of visitors eager to explore artworks inspired by the Brecknockshire landscape, including Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.

Founded in 2000, the Brecknock Art Trust has spent 25 years promoting the appreciation, collection, and display of local art, supporting acquisitions, exhibitions, publications, and museum development in Brecknock and surrounding areas.

A richly illustrated book, Championing Artists in Wales: 25 Years of the Brecknock Art Trust, by David Moore, is available for £10 and explores the artworks and projects funded by the trust.

Brecon’s y Gaer Museum is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4:30pm (last entry 4pm) and Saturday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm (last entry 3:30pm).
