Saratoga resident loses over $3M in cryptocurrency scam – East Bay Times

Nov. 3

Petty theft, theft by credit card: Between Oct. 17 and Oct. 28, someone stole a wallet at the Saratoga Library on Saratoga Avenue for a loss valued at approximately $350. The same person then used a credit card in the wallet to make fraudulent purchases totaling approximately $790.

Residential burglary: Between Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, someone entered a residence in the 14000 block of Horseshoe Drive by breaking a rear sliding glass door and stole jewelry.

Vehicle tampering, grand theft: Between Nov. 4 and Nov. 5, someone tampered with a vehicle parked in the driveway of a residence in the 14000 block of Elvira Street and stole its catalytic converter for a total loss valued at approximately $3,500.

Residential burglary: Someone entered a residence in the 20000 block of Verde Vista Lane by breaking a rear sliding glass door. The house was searched, but details of any stolen property weren’t provided.

Residential burglary: Someone accessed property in the 20000 block of Verde Vista Lane, cut power to the residence and then entered the home by breaking a rear sliding glass door. The house was searched, but details of any stolen property weren’t provided.

Theft by false pretenses: Someone scammed a Saratoga resident out of approximately $21,000 after promising an investment opportunity selling products online through an automated store, which did not happen. The suspects are known, and the case is being submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

Theft by false pretenses: Someone contacted a Saratoga resident online through a professional social network site and convinced the person to invest money in a fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme for a total loss valued at over $3 million.

Nov. 7

Possession of personal identifying information: Someone contacted a Saratoga resident and  claimed money needed to be wired pursuant to a fraud investigation and convinced the victim to provide a picture of her passport. The victim realized it was a scam and ceased communication before money was requested.

Loitering, under the influence and possession of a controlled substance, resisting/delaying arrest: Deputies responded to a trespassing call in the 14000 block of Cody Lane and investigated someone who was found loitering and had no lawful business on the property. Further investigation revealed the suspect was under the influence of a controlled substance and was in possession of methamphetamine. The suspect resisted, but was ultimately arrested and booked into main jail.
