Two Girls on the Shore, painted in 1963 and set at Spurn Point, captures two women emerging from the sea on a cold day.
Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, leisure, and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This painting, by celebrated artist David Remfry, is a wonderful addition to the permanent collection at Beverley Art Gallery.
“Two Girls on the Shore has quickly become a highlight of the gallery and will remain a central part of the collection for future generations to enjoy in Beverley and the East Riding.”
Originally on loan since December 2024, the painting is now a permanent part of the gallery’s collection.
Hannah Willetts, curator at Beverley Art Gallery, said: “The painting captures the stark beauty of East Yorkshire’s coastline, reflecting both the landscape and David’s deep connection to the area.”
David Remfry said: “It gives me enormous pleasure to know that Two Girls on the Shore has joined the Beverley Art Gallery collection.”
The acquisition was supported by the Friends of Beverley Art Gallery, Art Fund, and East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
