Warehouse Gallery and Fine Art Center opens in Grand Island

April 6, 20245 Mins Read

Kay Grimminger has opened a new art gallery in Railside.

The Warehouse Gallery and Fine Art Center, at 381 N. Walnut, is the location of the former Warehouse Gallery, previously owned and operated by Ginny Rinder.

“I have re-established the Warehouse Gallery in the same space,” Grimminger said. “My husband, Sam Grimminger, and I opened this space by purchasing the property and remodeling it.”

Grimminger primarily uses the space as her studio, but she will be featuring the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs 2023 Traveling Art Exhibit through April 24. The ANAC show features individual pieces out of the 281 submitted from across Nebraska to the annual ANAC conference. The winning entries were announced last summer in Columbus.

Serving as a platform for some of the finest artists in Nebraska, the current exhibition features 25 pieces. The Association of Nebraska Art Clubs, Inc., founded in 1965, hosts an annual convention in different locations across Nebraska in early summer, providing artists with networking opportunities and various workshops over a four-day event.

The traveling show showcases oil and acrylic paintings, encaustic, assemblage, mixed media, watercolor, pastels, batik, charcoal, photography, colored pencil, and fabric mosaic works, representing the best of Nebraska’s 35 art clubs that participate in the contest.

Grimminger and her husband purchased the property where the gallery was located in 2020. They remodeled the building, which housed other tenants following the gallery’s closure. The building, more than 100 years old, was updated by the Grimmingers while preserving much of its original charm.

This sculpture created by Alex Shaw specifically for Sam and Kay Grimminger, is made from the old elevator that was in the old Warehouse Gallery at 381 N. Walnut in Grand Island. The couple has reopened the building as an art gallery once again.

Art has been a lifelong passion, said Grimminger, who is 85 years old. She holds a master’s degree from Kearney State College and taught art for more than 40 years in her hometown of Grand Island.

Having cherished memories of the gallery under Rinder’s ownership, Grimminger decided to reopen it and retain its original name. Prior to the current show, she used the gallery as a workshop and displayed her own work.

The gallery will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. After the current show concludes, Grimminger plans on curating a retrospective of her work over the years.

With health issues preventing her from pursuing ceramics, Grimminger now focuses on fine jewelry. She aims to provide her artist friends with a platform to showcase and sell their work at her gallery.

“I love to do lots of different things, so I haven’t decided what I’m gonna do when I grow up,” Grimminger smiled and said.
