German art museum fires employee for sneaking own painting into gallery

April 9, 20241 Min Read

An art museum in Germany fired one of its employees after it was discovered he had hung his own painting in its gallery.

The man was a member of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich’s technical services team, according to a report by the Guardian, and had access to the gallery when it was not open, allowing him to hang the approximately 24-inch by 47-inch artwork.

According to the report, the man, identified only as being 51 years old, snuck his painting into the gallery because he was hoping to achieve “his artistic breakthrough.”

According to a museum spokesperson’s statement to German newspaper Seddeutsche Zeitung, as quoted by the Guardian, the painting was most likely not hanging long because “the invigilators notice something like that immediately.”

The man is the subject of a criminal complaint for “wilful damage to property” after drilling two holes in the museum’s walls to hang his painting, according to the report.

The report was not able to establish the style of the man’s painting or if it fit in aesthetically with the rest of the gallery’s subjects.
