Prabhakar Kolte is a visionary abstractionist and teacher to many senior artists

art galleryThe exhibition at Vesavar Art Gallery, Saga, comprises 24 large canvases, marking Kolte’s first such show in Pune.

Prabhakar Kolte is one of the country’s leading abstractionists and teacher to artists, such as Atul Dodiya, Jitish Kallat and Sudarshan Shetty. As Camp-based Vesavar Art Gallery completes its first year in Pune, it is with the works of Prabhakar Kolte that they are celebrating. The exhibition, Saga, will be held till June 9.

“The genesis of Saga is in another exhibition, El Dorado, which was held in June 2023. Kolte Sir had come to the gallery for the show. He said that he liked the space and expressed a desire to exhibit here. It was a moment of pride and humility for us that a great artist wanted to exhibit his works with us,” says Pranali Harpude, artist, curator and one of the founders of Vesavar.

This isn’t the first time Kolte has responded to the emotional call of a space. In 2018, he had agreed to an exhibition after more than 10 years because he was drawn to the venue, Nine Fish Art Gallery in Byculla, Mumbai. The gallery used to be a mill and since Kolte’s father was a clerk at Century Mill, the artist had spent his early life in a nearby chawl.
