Kineton High School students make it to the gallery at Compton Verney

April 24, 20242 Mins Read

ARTISTIC young people from Kineton High School are hanging with the greats.

Explosive artwork created  by the students is on display at Compton Verney.

They produced a variety of art inspired by Pierre-Jacques Volaire’s dramatic depiction of Vesuvius Erupting at Night.

The art works ranged from 3D models and works on paper to poetry and soundscapes, which form a new exhibition entitled Sensing Vesuvius running at the art gallery until May 19.

Made possible through the support of Art Friends Warwickshire and The Edith and Jack Griffiths Charitable Trust, the project also saw 30 young people take part in workshops with artist Aaron McPeake.

And Kineton High also had the rare treat of having an original Voltaire painting taken from Compton Verney’s nationally important collection of Neapolitan art hung in their school for a term. The painting, vividly capturing an eruption from the iconic volcano, inspired music, science, English and history lessons, along with other creative activities.

Headteacher Helen Bridge said: “The painting of Vesuvius was a fantastic opportunity for a piece of art to act as the platform for our students to link the volcano to other subjects. We are so grateful to the gallery for the opportunity to collaborate.”

Sensing Vesuvius Project Manager Grace Brindle added: “I am so inspired by the huge array of creative responses by the young people who used some really interesting materials from Lego and 3D printed models to crocheted wool and even tree bark. The exhibition that has come together is so joyful and will brighten anyone’s day – not to be missed.”
