Brightcove (NASDAQ:BCOV) shareholders have endured a 89% loss from investing in the stock three years ago

April 27, 20244 Mins Read

It’s not possible to invest over long periods without making some bad investments. But really bad investments should be rare. So consider, for a moment, the misfortune of Brightcove Inc. (NASDAQ:BCOV) investors who have held the stock for three years as it declined a whopping 89%. That would be a disturbing experience. The more recent news is of little comfort, with the share price down 61% in a year. Furthermore, it’s down 32% in about a quarter. That’s not much fun for holders. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It’s a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it’s worth keeping in mind there’s more to life than money, anyway.

Now let’s have a look at the company’s fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

Check out our latest analysis for Brightcove

Given that Brightcove didn’t make a profit in the last twelve months, we’ll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn’t make profits, we’d generally hope to see good revenue growth. That’s because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Over the last three years, Brightcove’s revenue dropped 0.4% per year. That’s not what investors generally want to see. Having said that the 24% annualized share price decline highlights the risk of investing in unprofitable companies. We’re generally averse to companies with declining revenues, but we’re not alone in that. There’s no more than a snowball’s chance in hell that share price will head back to its old highs, in the short term.

The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Having said that, most people consider earnings and revenue growth trends to be a more meaningful guide to the business. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think Brightcove will earn in the future (free profit forecasts).

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 24% in the last year, Brightcove shareholders lost 61%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year’s performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 13% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We’ve identified 2 warning signs with Brightcove , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.

Brightcove is not the only stock that insiders are buying. For those who like to find winning investments this free list of growing companies with recent insider purchasing, could be just the ticket.
