Investing in Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) five years ago would have delivered you a 83% gain

April 28, 20243 Mins Read

Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. Buying under-rated businesses is one path to excess returns. For example, long term Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) shareholders have enjoyed a 83% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 66% (not including dividends).

Let’s take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they’ve been consistent with shareholders returns.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the five years of share price growth, Amazon.com moved from a loss to profitability. That would generally be considered a positive, so we’d hope to see the share price to rise.

You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

It’s probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Amazon.com’s earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

It’s good to see that Amazon.com has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 70% in the last twelve months. That’s better than the annualised return of 13% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. Before spending more time on Amazon.com it might be wise to click here to see if insiders have been buying or selling shares.
