E.Chambliss.Art Gallery provides a place for artists and community on Oct. 26 –

In opening her second-floor gallery and studio at 1326 Dr. MLK Jr Street in St. Pete, artist Elaine Chambliss wanted to ensure that “people in all areas get to enjoy art that communicates transformational messages.”

She also wanted to open the space as a way to connect with others “on a deeper level…and inspire them to take action to promote community building.”

Chambliss herself had transitioned from civil engineering technical and computer-aided drafting to becoming a visual artist; her artistic production resulted in her being awarded the Industrial Dome Award from Warehouse District and an Individual Artist award through Pinellas Art Alliance.

Elaine Chambliss Dogan

A graduate of the St. Pete Workforce Entrepreneurship Program and Art Business Academy through St. Petersburg College and the Greenhouse Entrepreneur Academy, she has also worked as a part-time instructor at St Petersburg Pinellas Technical College.

After painting in her home office for three years, she realized it was time to find a space where she could grow in her professional art practice while providing a space for creative engagements that would allow her to “give back.”

“I began to look for a spot to paint close to my home,” she shared. “Every day I would see this building with a vacant space from my window,” and knowing that it had previously been rented by a Black-owned business encouraged her to reach out to the owner.

“I thought I would get a break because I lived in the community and the building was old,” she added.

After going through the process of opening a business space through the City of St. Petersburg, upon receiving her certificate of occupancy, Chambliss realized she would have to make a few investments and cosmetic changes.

The space had been vacant for a few years, so Chambliss realized it would take some TLC to transform it into a creative space for art. She was awarded funds from the City of St. Petersburg to help with business needs and make the second-floor space more “accommodating.”

“The community came by and helped with repairs and helped to clear and clean the lot area,“ she shared. Funds still need to be raised for a new central air unit.

Since she’s moved into the space she’s offered a watercolor painting event outdoors, an “Expressive Art for Social Justice” event with the Dream Defenders, and a Studio Experience with STORY 727.

The space also hosts paint classes on Paint Day Sundays with professional artists.

Currently, Chambliss is presenting “Intro” — a monthly showcasing event for artists and artistic talent. “The event aims to encourage new cultural experiences, foster creativity, and promote a positive, inclusive representation of our diverse community,” she relayed.

The first “Intro” will be this Saturday, October 26 from 7 pm to 10 pm, organized with Kyle J. Brown/The Colour Brown.

Kyle J. Brown

The Colour Brown, Kyle J. Brown, is a graphic designer, author, and educator. He seeks to help foster a love for art in the community and inspire future generations of artists.

The evening also features Taissiia Mamchenko, a Ukrainian artist, portrait painter, designer, and gallery assistant open to various mediums and new collaborations with other artists. Jazz saxophonist Henry Ashwood will provide the musical background for the event

Chambliss noted that to keep the space open, community members can rent the space for small public engagements and group activities for creative arts. It is available for private exhibits, sales, and showcases or paint workshops for the youth.

“I won’t tell an artist what they can’t paint,” said Chambliss, but added that she will be selecting artists based on her desire to maintain a safe, positive, inclusive, and diverse atmosphere. “No drugs on the premises. Professional people want to come here also,” she added.

“Into,” an evening of visual art, live music, and open mic performances on Saturday, October 26th, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.

Admission is $20.00.  Free parking and light refreshments will be served. All ages are invited. Reservations can be made at https://www.echamblissstudio.com
