We Are Still Here, on display at Gallery North in Hailsham, East Sussex until March 21, showcases poetry, visual art and personal testimonies from students in the region who are living through conflict and hardship.
The exhibition is based on a recently published anthology of the same name, featuring the writings of young people from Gaza’s universities.
Emma Donovan, exhibitions manager and curator at Gallery North, said: “As a community-centred art gallery and not-for-profit organisation based in Hailsham for more than two decades, our aim has always been to provide an open, creative space – available to all – that celebrates artistic expression in all its forms and comments on the world around us.
“We are pleased to be able to host this important body of work and to share the stories of these students. The poetry is displayed alongside artwork from artists known to us who were invited to create work in response to the poetry in the anthology.”
The works, written amid violence, starvation and blockade, speak of resilience, displacement and survival.
The exhibition also features new pieces by Sussex artists who have created works in response to the students’ stories.
Pieces include paintings, music, textiles and mixed material works, all exploring themes of hope, grief and resistance.
