Must-visit art galleries in every province of South Africa

July 7, 20254 Mins Read

If you’re looking for a meaningful way to connect with SA culture, make time for an art gallery or two. These spaces are more than just places to look at paintings—they’re where stories are told, history is preserved and beautiful ideas are brought to life.

And you’re spoiled for choice – every province has a gallery that’s worth stepping into. Here’s where to find some of the most inspiring art across the country.

Western Cape

Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town

This is art on a grand scale. Housed in a converted grain silo at the V&A Waterfront, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is a celebration of African creativity—past, present and future. The space is stunning, and the exhibitions are always thought-provoking.

See the current list of events and exhibitions happening at the Zeitz here.

Everard Read, Cape Town

Tucked in leafy Gardens, Everard Read is as elegant as it is adventurous. Expect world-class exhibitions by both established and rising artists, often spilling out into a tranquil sculpture garden.

Knysna Fine Art, Knysna

On the Garden Route? Make time for this beautiful gallery set in a historic building at Knysna Fine Art. It’s one of the most respected spaces in the Southern Cape and champions a wide range of South African talent.

Gauteng

Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG), Joburg CBD

Despite some challenges in recent years, JAG remains a cornerstone of South Africa’s art world. With over 9 000 works over the years —including pieces by Picasso, Monet and Irma Stern—it’s worth the visit for the sheer depth of its collection.

BKhz Gallery, Rosebank

This intimate space, BKhz Gallery, started by artist Banele Khoza, is full of heart. It’s a platform for bold, often deeply personal work, and it’s helping to shape the future of African art.

David Krut Projects, Parkwood

Part gallery, part print workshop, part bookstore—David Krut Projects is a creative hub. Come for the art, stay for the fascinating conversations (and maybe a monotype print or two).

KwaZulu-Natal

KZNSA Gallery, Durban

In the heart of Glenwood, under the shade of old acacias, KZNSA is where Durban’s creative community comes together. There’s always something new to see—and a café that makes a mean slice of cake.

Durban Art Gallery

Just upstairs from the city’s public library, the longstanding Durban Art Gallery features a mix of African, European and Asian works. It’s an underrated gem, especially if you love cultural history.

Eastern Cape

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum, Gqeberha

Set in a leafy park, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum is all about connection—between past and present, community and creativity. Its focus on Eastern Cape artists makes it a meaningful stop if you’re exploring the region.

Free State

Oliewenhuis Art Museum, Bloemfontein

With its stately architecture, lush gardens and sculpture park, Oliewenhuis is more than just a gallery—it’s a place to slow down and take in the beauty. Inside, you’ll find a strong focus on South African visual art.

Mpumalanga

White River Gallery, Casterbridge Centre

Just a short drive from Kruger, the serene White River Gallery is a lovely detour from game drives. The gallery features carefully curated contemporary art in a peaceful garden setting.

Northern Cape

William Humphreys Art Gallery, Kimberley

Tucked in the diamond capital of South Africa, William Humphreys Art Gallery surprises with its elegance and range. Alongside European masters, you’ll find a strong collection of South African art and decorative works.

Whether you’re travelling far or exploring close to home, visiting a gallery can be a refreshing way to experience a place. You might come for the art, but you’ll leave with something more—a new perspective, a spark of creativity, or a quiet moment of wonder.
