June 21, 20243 Mins Read

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Art Gallery is a fantastic exhibition of more than 300 pictures in a variety of different mediums, including everything from oil and acrylic to pastel and pencil, as well as sculptures in metal, ceramic and cold cast bronze.

It brings together and showcases the work of East Anglian artists, to a wide-ranging audience, enabling them to purchase original artwork, with prices to suit all budgets.

The knowledgeable art stewards, many of whom are artists themselves, are on hand to discuss the various pieces in the exhibition with visitors. Artists will be working at the front of the marquee and also en plein air around the showground.

“To celebrate our anniversary, we have launched a new project introducing an art initiative to promote youth art in our county,” said Art Gallery administrator Rebecca Banyard.

“Its aim is to promote youth art talent in Norfolk and help young artists get a foothold in the professional art market, while boosting the influence of young artists in the exhibition.”

Children can also take part in a fun activity sheet called ‘Find the Art’ and everyone can get involved by voting for your favourite artwork in the Visitor’s Choice Award.

“Norfolk is home to many great artists and it is always a pleasure to see such a cross-section of their work at the Art Gallery,” said Arnolds Keys managing partner Guy Gowing, who selects the Sponsor’s Choice Award each year.

“Choosing a winner of the Sponsor’s Choice is always a serious business given the high quality of all of the art which is displayed at the exhibition.”

What inspired you to paint ‘View Over Brancaster’?

I found this spot with a friend. Initially I wasn’t inspired as the light was flat, then the sun came out – and there was my painting waiting to be captured in oils. I don’t think I’ve ever set my easel up so fast.

What should visitors look out for at the Art Gallery?

When buying a painting, look for one that means something to you and that you will want to keep looking at. Don’t be put off by a frame, it can easily be changed.

What inspired you to draw ‘Safety in Numbers’?

Ducklings were frequent visitors to my old studio and, as I observed them growing up, I thought it would make a lovely drawing. Plus, I love butterflies so I thought I could combine the two subjects into one.

What’s your favourite part of the Royal Norfolk Show?

Oh, that’s easy: the animals.

ANDREW MARINO

Joint winner of the Visitors’ Choice Award 2023

What should visitors look out for when enjoying art?

The feeling and personality behind the brush strokes, which are a good indicator of how the artist felt whilst painting.

Any advice for would-be artists?

Keep producing and step out of your comfort zone as beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
