FARMINGTON, ME (October 16, 2024)—The UMF Art Gallery is pleased to present its upcoming exhibit, “Bethany Engstrom: In the Works.” Engstrom’s compelling work is on display from Oct. 31 – Dec. 13, 2024. Salt Water Works: Duck Trap
In her engaging multimedia installations, Belfast-based artist Bethany Engstrom creates imaginative encounters with real and virtual places. Drawing on her studies in philosophy and pop culture, she questions how our shared experiences of increasing environmental threat and common daily struggles affect our relationship to social spaces and relationships.
This exhibition sees Engstrom performing in and around a river in northern Maine, expanding the themes of her recent series exploring the work of motherhood–she has a young daughter–and how that work distorts our perception of time.
Engstrom completed her PhD in Intermedia Collaborative Practices (2014) and her MFA in Intermedia (2011) at the University of Maine.
She has been an associate curator at The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (2015-2021), and she is currently the managing director of SPEEDWELL Contemporary in Portland. Engstrom teaches the visual arts at Bowdoin College, the University of Maine and the University of Maine at Augusta.
The UMF Art Gallery is dedicated to bringing contemporary art to the campus and regional communities. The gallery is located at 246 Main Street, behind the Admissions Office.
Gallery hours are Tuesdays-Sundays 12-4 p.m., and by appointment. Please contact Sarah at maline@maine.edu or 207-778-1062 for more information or to make an appointment. https://www.artgalleryumf.org/
