Ranchi: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested a cyber criminal for cheating around 150 people from the state, mainly from Ranchi and Bokaro, of around Rs 5 crore in the name of investment in crypto-currency.CID director general Anurag Gupta Wednesday said, “The criminal, Amit Jaiswal, was arrested from Delhi on Tuesday and brought to Ranchi on transit remand. The accused is a key member of the gang and the mastermind behind development of fraudulent websites.”Another accused, Sashi Shankar Kumar of Muzaffarpur in Bihar, was nabbed earlier and sent to jail in the same case, Gupta said.The complainant said initially Sashi helped him earn ‘profit’ through a gold bond scheme and won his confidence. Sashi and Amit then asked him to invest in cryptocurrency through the website, Oropay.io. He then transferred funds to wallet addresses displayed on the website. The website displayed significant profit in the form of TRON crypto-currency, which could be redeemable.Soon, the complainant encouraged other people to invest in the scheme. The accused adopted aggressive marketing strategy to lure more investors. They held seminars and conferences in big hotels and conducted zoom meetings. However, the gang soon shutdown the website one day.The fraudsters developed another website where people were asked to invest in bockchain wallets. The profit of investments, however, could not be redeemed. Moreover, the fraudsters introduced two new tokens to encourage investment.
