A warning from Owen Sound Police about a rise of cryptocurrency investment scams in the area.

City Police say residents have reported scenarios where scammers claim to be legitimate brokers and direct people to convincing, but fradulent platforms. Police say they’ve also received reports about victims being pressured to invest increasing amount of money after being shown fake profits, and fraudsters preventing account withdrawals and demanding additional payments for “fees” or “verification.”

Owen Sound Police are reminding you to be cautious of all unsolicited investment offers, especially those promising high or guaranteed returns.

They published a statement with several tips to help you avoid falling victim to cryptocurrency scams. Police say you should never share banking information or remote access to your computer, and never share the private keys to your crypto wallet.

They’re also reminding you to never send crypto to someone you haven’t met in person, and always research investment platforms carefully and ensure they are registered with Canadian securities regulators.
