Man United finance update after Cunha, Mbeumo deals amid PSR ‘disconnect’

Man United will be desperate to continue adding to Ruben Amorim’s squad this summer as their rivals spend big on upgrades.

That is the view of football finance expert Dan Plumley, who told Football Insider exclusively that the timing of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo‘s arrivals at Old Trafford may affect further business going forward.

The Red Devils’ financial situation has been heavily debated recently. Having lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final, United missed out on £100million worth of revenue that would have been generated by qualifying for the Champions League [BBC Sport].

What’s more, the club admitted they were at risk of breaching the Premier League‘s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) [The Athletic], although the 20-time champions of England avoided a sanction on 30 June.

Man United have no PSR issues

Despite the suggestions that the club are struggling financially, finance expert Plumley told Football Insider that there was “nothing there to suggest” the Red Devils had any monetary problems.

The senior lecturer from Sheffield Hallam University previously explained to Football Insider that Man United use two different companies to file their accounts, and Red Football Limited, the company that files the club’s accounts with UEFA and the Premier League, was reporting a loss of just £36.2m, a stark difference from Manchester United plc’s losses of £130.7m [The Athletic].

Plumley pointed to the different companies causing “a lot of the disconnect” in the various reporting and beliefs surrounding the club’s financial situation.

He said: “Yeah, I think how much more they spend is an interesting question.

“If you look back to PSR compliance, we were looking at some numbers a few weeks ago that were suggesting how much clubs could afford to lose before that window of the 30th of June, and United were okay against that window.

“We were talking about that in the context of looking at the Red Football Company group, rather than the club group, which is where a lot of the disconnect has been.

“And the interesting thing for me when you look at Mbeumo and Cunha as examples, Cunha was in before that 30th of June deadline, but they were trying to get Mbeumo done during that time as well, which would suggest that they were okay if they were trying to push that deal through.

“That second transfer will now fall into a different window. It’s the year that we’re talking about now that that’s restarted.

“So, there’s nothing there to suggest against any of those numbers that we were looking at a few weeks ago that there’s any cause for concern on those two signings.”

Man United eye deal for Nicolas Jackson

In the unending quest to strengthen their side, Man United are eyeing a deal for Nicolas Jackson, Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider exclusively.

Although Plumley explained that the club are in no real danger with PSR, Chelsea’s asking price of £80m [Sky Sports] is far too high for Amorim’s side.

The Portuguese boss is prioritising a number nine in a bid to replace the struggling Rasmus Hojlund.

Benjamin Sesko is also a target for Man United, but the Slovenian striker will likely have a similar, or higher, asking price than Jackson.
