Skadden hires Linklaters London finance partner

April 9, 20242 Mins Read

The US legal giant has recruited financial regulation partner Sebastian Barling from the Magic Circle law firm, according to people familiar with the situation.

Barling spent nearly 13 years at Linklaters and was promoted to partner in 2018. He previously spent four years at Reed Smith.

Linklaters has been hit by a string of partner exits to top US law firms in recent months.

The firm’s co-head of leveraged finance David Irvine left the firm last February for Gibson Dunn, Financial News first reported.

Corporate partner Dan Schuster-Woldan left Linklaters in January to join Paul Weiss in London, following private equity M&A partner Will Aitken-Davies and antitrust partner Nicole Kar, who also jumped to the same firm in 2023.

Late last year, leveraged finance partner Noel Hughes also moved from Linklaters to Skadden.

Last month, Linklaters litigation partner Susana Cao Miranda left the firm for litigation boutique Pallas Partners.

Recent hires for Linklaters include Kirkland & Ellis intellectual property partner Katie Coltart and Addleshaw Goddard competition head Bruce Kilpatrick.

Barling’s hire comes after Skadden last month poached Delphine Jaugey from Debevoise & Plimpton as head of secondaries for Europe, along with associates Laurence Hanesworth and Aaron McPherson.

Skadden also hired leveraged finance specialist Sebastian FitzGerald in December from rival US law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher.

Skadden promoted private equity partner Richard Youle to head its London office last year. Youle was a partner at Linklaters and White & Case before joining Skadden in 2017.

The US law firm in moved to 22 Bishopsgate in the City in 2022 from its previous base in Canary Wharf.

Skadden posted revenue of nearly $3.3bn last year, with average profit per equity partner of $5.4m.
