Hillingdon Council has once again topped the charts for the number of Green Flag spaces maintained by a UK authority, marking the twelfth consecutive year of excellence. The announcement, made today (Tuesday 16 July), confirms that the council has retained its impressive 67 Green Flags, recognising parks and green spaces of the highest calibre.
The Green Flag Awards, organised by Keep Britain Tidy, are a national and international scheme that honors parks with the highest standards in facilities, cleanliness, environmental friendliness, and community engagement.
In celebration of the borough’s diamond jubilee next year, Hillingdon Council announced a £1 million investment program last year to further enhance its parks and green spaces. Recently, renovation works have been completed on the bandstand in Barra Hall Park, Hayes. As part of the ongoing Parks Enhancement Programme, Bessingby Park in Ruislip Manor will soon see improvements in landscaping, seating, paths, and signage, with more upgrades planned for other locations.
Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, expressed his delight at the news: “This is fantastic news for residents who continue to see investment, maintenance, and improvements to the green spaces which make our borough so pleasant.
“We’re committed to creating a green future for residents and nature and this is reflected in the continued prioritisation of our parks as key assets for all.
“The Green Flag Awards show these parks meet the highest international standards so we don’t take for granted having achieved the top spot nationally for 12 years in a row.”
The Green Flag Award scheme is judged by a coalition of environmental charities, including Keep Britain Tidy, and serves as the national benchmark for public parks. Hillingdon Council has successfully maintained its current Green Flag total for three consecutive years.
