Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, celebrates his 76th birthday on July 10. He was born on this day in 1949. He was the first batter to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket, and with 34 hundreds, he remains one of the original greats of the game. Fondly regarded as the Little Master, Gavaskar, an opener, was an enigma on the field. Despite being a diminutive batter, he negotiated the fiery West Indies bowling attack with perfection and elegance, demonstrating his sound technique and impeccable shot selection. He also won the 1983 World Cup with India.

Under his guidance, India won the 1984 Asia Cup and the Benson and Hedges World Championship of Cricket in 1985. He is also one of the few former cricketers who seamlessly transitioned into a successful career as a commentator, author, and columnist – becoming a prominent voice of Indian cricket.

Gavaskar is a recipient of the Arjuna Award and the Padma Bhushan. In 2009, he was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and was honoured with the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. As he celebrates his 76th birthday, Sports Now looks into his empire, investments, and net worth.

Gavaskar’s net worth

Gavaskar’s exact net worth is not publicly available, but according to a report from Celebrity Net Worth, it is estimated at Rs 257 crore. Despite playing in an era when money was scarce, Gavaskar went on to become one of the wealthiest cricketers in India. He enjoys over 489k followers on Instagram. In addition to brand endorsements, Gavaskar’s wealth is derived from public appearances, commentary, investments, and real estate.

Gavaskar is one of the highest-paid commentators in the IPL. In the 2025 season of the league, he earned Rs 4.17 crore. Besides the IPL, he is a seasoned international commentator. According to a Sportskeeda report, Gavaskar’s salary as a commentator is estimated at Rs 2,14,000 per match and Rs 47,24,000 per series. Gavaskar has reportedly earned nearly Rs 35.92 crore from his commentary duties alone and an additional Rs 18.9 crore from his IPL roles since the league’s inception. He also received a sizable paycheck when he was appointed interim president of the BCCI in 2014.

Investments

Gavaskar has invested in several ventures, including the board game startup Binca Games and real estate in Dubai in 2019. He also founded Professional Management Group (PMG), one of India’s first sports management firms, in 1985. The company handles player management, sponsorships, and event organisation. Additionally, he holds stakes in Samco Ventures and Chqbook.

In 2017, Dubai-based property developer The First Group announced Gavaskar as their brand representative in India. He also invested in one of their marquee projects, The One at Jumeirah Village Triangle — a 599-room luxury hotel in New Dubai.

Gavaskar’s property

According to Housing.com, Gavaskar owns three swanky houses in Mumbai – two in Worli and one in Panvel. One of these buildings is a sea-facing property, and Gavaskar owns the entire nine-storey structure. However, his most expensive property remains the posh Isprava Villa Vivre at Assagao, North Goa. The 5,000 square foot villa, bought in 2017 for Rs 20 crore, is his vacation home. It features four bedrooms, European-style interiors, and is surrounded by lush greenery. Gavaskar also owns an E60 BMW 5-Series luxury sedan.
