7 Questions for Miami Fine Art Gallery Founder Les Roberts on the City’s Ascent to International Art Stardom

June 18, 20246 Mins Read

For over two decades, Miami Fine Art Gallery has maintained a position in the city as a bastion of historic and contemporary art by both local and international artists. Presenting an eclectic array of work, from blue chip icons like Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons to some of the most sought-after creatives today such as Mr. Brainwash and KAWS, the gallery can meet collectors where they are, and offer collectors exactly what they are looking for.

Miami Fine Art is helmed by Les Roberts, who trained in New York at institutions such as New York University and Sotheby’s and brings a sense of avid enthusiasm—along with his skilled team—for art to the gallery and his client’s needs. Working within the Miami art scene now for several decades, Roberts has garnered a unique perspective and outlook on not only the art market but the evolution of the city’s position within the greater art world.

We caught up with Roberts to learn more about what he’s observed in Miami’s ever-evolving art scene and what advice he has for new collectors.

Can you tell us a bit about your career trajectory leading up to the establishment of Miami Fine Art in 1997?

I have immersed myself in the art world my entire life, purchasing my first Erté piece at 17 and an Andy Warhol from the “Cowboys and Indians” series a few years later. This early passion for art led me to open my first gallery in Orlando. In 1997, noticing a surge of people moving to Miami for investment and permanent residency, I saw an opportunity to cater to their growing interest in art. This inspired me to establish Miami Fine Art Gallery, and now we have three locations in Miami aiming to attract new collectors and enthusiasts by showcasing diverse and compelling artworks.

Since founding the gallery, how have you observed the Miami art scene change or evolve?

The most significant change in the Miami art scene was Art Basel’s decision to establish a fair in the city. This inclusion positioned Miami on the international art map, leveraging its strategic location as a bridge to Latin America and Europe. Additionally, Miami’s diverse cultural influences have enriched its art scene, making it a dynamic and multifaceted environment for artistic exploration. Art Basel’s presence has attracted a global audience of collectors, curators, and artists, fostering a thriving market for contemporary art. The city’s unique blend of cultures, along with its vibrant community of local artists, galleries, and institutions, has contributed to Miami’s reputation as a premier destination for art and culture. This transformation has solidified Miami’s status as a key player in the global art world.

Approaching three decades of operation, looking back, what has been one of your proudest, or alternatively most memorable, experiences you’ve had with the gallery?

One of my proudest moments was acquiring rare art from the Andy Warhol Foundation. This milestone underscored our gallery’s dedication to curating exceptional works. Another standout moment is the joy of helping clients discover the art they’ve always desired, fulfilling their dreams and enhancing their collections. Our unwavering commitment to maintaining the impeccable condition and provenance of our pieces is a core aspect of our gallery’s reputation and success. This dedication not only assures our clients of the authenticity and quality of their acquisitions, but also fosters long-term relationships built on trust and satisfaction. These elements collectively define our gallery’s identity and contribute to its enduring legacy in the art world.

What do you look for or what excites you about the art and artists you choose to show?

I’m fascinated by art that has changed the world, particularly the works of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Their ability to transform mass production ideas into unique art pieces deeply interests me. This visionary approach, where everyday elements are elevated to extraordinary art, is what I seek in artists. I look for those who push boundaries and create works that challenge conventional perceptions. I aim to bring pieces to our gallery that not only captivate but also inspire and provoke thought. This commitment to groundbreaking art defines our gallery’s collection, offering our clients pieces that are both remarkable and transformative.

What advice would you give to a new collector just starting out on their collecting journey?

For those new to collecting, it’s crucial to find a gallery director you trust. Ask about their experience and the provenance of the artwork they offer. This ensures that you’re making informed decisions and acquiring authentic pieces. Begin with smaller acquisitions to build your understanding of the art market and to discover what styles and artists truly resonate with you. Take your time to educate yourself, attend gallery shows, and engage with other collectors. By gradually developing your taste and knowledge, you’ll make more confident and meaningful additions to your collection. This approach not only enhances your appreciation of art but also ensures a rewarding and enriching collecting journey.

Have you recognized any trends either within the local or greater art market recently that you find particularly interesting or exciting?

Recently, there has been a growing interest in street art, with street artists making significant waves in the art market through various media. In Miami, collectors are increasingly drawn to works by artists like Banksy, KAWS, Kai, Retna, and Richard Orlinski, reflecting the lively and evolving art scene here. These artists bring a fresh, dynamic perspective to contemporary art, merging urban culture with fine art. Additionally, there has been a surge in blue chip art recently, especially by Andy Warhol. As a result, we’ve amassed a spectacular inventory of Andy Warhol artworks, many of which are one-of-a-kind pieces. Their work not only captivates a diverse audience but also challenges traditional notions of art and its place in society. This surge in popularity highlights Miami’s role as a vibrant hub for innovative and influential art, where collectors seek out cutting-edge pieces that redefine the boundaries of artistic expression.

Is there any gallery news or forthcoming events that you can tell us about?

On July 6, our Coconut Grove location will feature our biggest exhibition yet of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol pieces. This is a rare chance for collectors to purchase exceptional works by these iconic artists.
