Abbotsford’s Kariton Art Gallery closed until further notice due to small fire

May 31, 20241 Min Read

The Kariton Art Gallery and Abbotsford Arts Council (AAC) office in Abbotsford will be closed until further notice due to a small fire that occurred this week.

The fire was quickly extinguished and no one was injured. It is not known what caused the fire.

In a statement, the AAC confirmed there was no obvious damage to the artwork or items in the main gallery, gift shop, staff offices or Downie Wenjack Legacy Space.

The fire did damage some of the exterior, as well as caused some staining to the interior basement stairwell. There is a lingering smoke smell that is being managed through fans and air purifiers.

Due to the unforeseen closure, the previously scheduled June exhibition Big Tiny will be postponed. AAC says there is no new date for the exhibition, and artists and visitors will be notified once a time has been confirmed.

The gallery will be closed until it can be assessed and repaired.
