All About Art … with photographer Laurie Metzger

Artists strive to find beauty in work and daily lives. Photographer Laurie Metzger has spent over 30 years doing just that.

Like painters whose every stroke can alter the perspective of an image, she’s learned subtle shifts in elements of nature can change a photograph.

After a career in banking in Southern California and Japan, Laurie turned her focus to photography. In Santa Monica, Calif., she focused on her photographic education while working as an industrial photographer for the local water district and a natural gas utility.

When she and her husband relocated to Charlotte, N.C., Metzger opened a portrait studio with a focus on families and children. Upon the couple’s “retirement,” they moved south and settled on Lake Keowee.

It wasn’t until the pandemic slowed life down that she picked up her camera again. She challenged herself to post a daily photograph on social media — and for over a year and a half, she did just that. It was a chance to fall in love with photography once more. She now consistently captures sunrises glistening over Lake Keowee, waterfalls and various aspects of nature.

She utilizes software to reimagine photographs, creating her own world through her collection ‘Imaginature,’ showcased at the Art Gallery on Pendleton Square. Metzger joined the collective of artists who she says consistently inspire and uplift each other. She presents her photographs on various mediums such as canvas, acrylic, metal and traditional photographic paper.
