Art exhibit in Worcester to feature the Malvern Hills in all its glory

June 8, 20242 Mins Read

WORCESTER art gallery and museum is holding a show of Dame Laura Knight: I Paint Today, featuring the Malvern Hills until June, 30.

Since the exhibition opened in January over 6,000 people have visited the display.

Dame Laura Knight’s exhibition pays respects to her love of Worcestershire and the Malvern Hills inspired her art throughout later years of life.

I Paint Today has a selection of Laura’s work and focuses on key events, characters and achievements which helped to shape her life and career.

Worcester city collections are on show as well as loans from regional and national collections including the Imperial War Museum, to tell the story of a woman who grew out of the Victorian era and developed her craft through a period of tumultuous change.

From 1933 Laura Knight and her husband, Harold were frequent visitors to Malvern and fell in love with the landscape of the hills which became a subject of her paintings.

The Yellow Dress, in the Worcester city collection shows the costume making studio at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

At the start of the Second World War, Laura enlisted with the war artists advisory committee, and from the Malvern Hills she watched the bombings of Coventry and Birmingham.

Deborah Fox, Museums Worcestershire senior curator said: “There has been an incredible response to this exhibition and a real outpouring of love for Dame Laura Knight and her wonderful paintings.

“We are pleased to have welcomed visitors from across the country to see the range and glorious nature of her work.”
