The Art Gallery of Algoma marked a major milestone July 7, celebrating its 50th anniversary as one of Canada’s leading regional art institutions

NEWS RELEASE

ART GALLERY OF ALGOMA

***************************

The Art Gallery of Algoma (AGA) proudly celebrated its 50th anniversary on July 7, 2025, marking a half-century of artistic excellence and community engagement. Founded in 1975 by passionate volunteers and civic leaders, the AGA has since evolved into one of Canada’s premier regional art institutions.

With deep gratitude, the AGA thanks everyone who participated in the anniversary celebration — a day filled with art, connection and reflection on five decades of cultural contribution.

To honour this milestone and give back to the community that has supported it over the years, free admission will be offered to all residents of Sault Ste. Marie throughout July and Aug. 2025. This initiative reflects the AGA’s ongoing commitment to accessibility, inclusivity and community engagement. The gallery looks forward to welcoming both new and returning visitors to explore the richness of its exhibitions and programs.

“Our goal has always been to make art accessible and meaningful to all,” said AGA board president Mark Lepore. “This community has played a pivotal role in our journey, and we are proud to offer this gesture of thanks.”

Throughout its history, the AGA has showcased dynamic exhibitions, hosted insightful artist talks, delivered educational programming and offered public events that highlight the transformative power of art. Much of the AGA’s permanent collection has been shaped by the generosity of artists and collectors, and the AGA Shop continues to spotlight handcrafted works by talented local artists and artisans.

The AGA extends heartfelt thanks to its members, donors and volunteers — past and present — whose contributions have shaped the gallery into the vibrant cultural hub it is today.

“Every volunteer hour, every donation and every creative idea has made a lasting impact,” the AGA team shared. “We are deeply grateful for the dedication and passion that has sustained us for five remarkable decades.”

As the AGA looks toward the future, it remains steadfast in its mission to enrich lives through the arts and serve as a welcoming space for all.
