Artist’s reimagining of St Helens buildings showcased in exhibition

June 12, 20242 Mins Read

A former graphic design student at St Helens University Centre, Lucy Davies decided to focus her final project on the place where she grew up and “show it off in a different way”.

The idea started when Lucy noticed many impressive features in the building work above town centre shops, and after developing her project through linoprinting and risoprinting, she created a vibrant, colourful, and unique reimagining of St Helens.

With Lucy submitting 12 images as part of her ‘flip book’ final project, she submitted four of these designs to an exhibition partnered with the Liverpool Architecture Festival.

With the exhibition title ‘A Window to Your Neighbourhood’, Lucy’s images were accepted and are now being showcased at the dot-art gallery in Liverpool City Centre until August.

Speaking about her project, Lucy, 22, from Haresfinch, said: “The idea started when I was walking about the town centre, and I noticed all of the interesting features in buildings where people don’t often look up at.

“The idea was to help people appreciate these buildings more and show them off in a different way.”

In her work, Lucy also thought it was important to showcase some of the town’s most iconic buisnesses, including Burchall’s bakery on Westfield Street, and buildings that will soon be demolished around the bus station on Bickerstaffe Street, as a lasting memory to the town as it was.

With “great feedback” to her showcase at the exhibition, Lucy hopes to continue with an artistic career in printmaking.
