This summer Chippenham Museum is officially opening new gallery spaces for temporary exhibitions.
Re/imagining Maud Heath
24 June – 31 August 2024
The first exhibition in the new galleries celebrates Maud Heath who 550 years ago, on her husband’s death, gifted properties and land in Chippenham into a trust fund so that the income from them could be used to maintain a causeway, and this remains today. We will discuss the myths that surround Maud and, with new research, uncover her true story.
The exhibition will also explore the different ways in which Maud Heath and her causeway have been celebrated by artists, writers, and everyday people across the centuries. From medieval documents to contemporary art, the exhibition will also include the opportunity to make your own Causeway and record your memories of this famous local landmark. This is part of a National Lottery Heritage Fund HLF funded community project with partners Yesterdays Story, The Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre and Chippenham Library.
The Museum will also share the changes they have made to their permanent galleries which will now showcase some of the important local and contemporary art collection.
