A new exhibition promises to transport visitors into a magical world of fairies, flowers and folklore.

Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies have enchanted generations since their first publication in 1923.

Sarah Newman, manager of the Russell-Cotes, said: “We’re delighted to share the magic of Cicely Mary Barker’s Flower Fairies with our visitors.

“This exhibition brings her artistry to life, from original illustrations to her beautiful Dorset landscapes, offering a truly enchanting experience for all ages.”

The fairies, each based on real children and set among carefully observed plants, blend botanical accuracy with gentle imagination.

The display features a selection of Barker’s original artworks, early sketches, personal sketchbooks and preparatory studies, offering insights into her creative process.

Raised in a family of passionate gardeners, Barker developed a deep love of nature that shines through in every piece.

The exhibition also explores her use of carefully posed child models and precise plant observation to create her whimsical fairies.

Visitors can view rare early illustrations, learn more about her family connections, and explore her Dorset landscapes.

Her paintings feature scenes from Swanage, Highcliffe, and Hengistbury Head.

Designed to appeal to families and art lovers alike, the exhibition includes interactive experiences both inside the gallery and throughout the historic house and gardens.

Visitors can pose for a magical fairy photo, take part in themed activities, and follow a dedicated fairy trail through the gardens.

The Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum is located in Bournemouth.

The exhibition offers a nostalgic and imaginative journey for adults and children alike.

It celebrates more than a century of Cicely Mary Barker’s artistry, nature, and folklore.

Visitors are encouraged to plan their visit for a day filled with enchantment and exploration.
