New art gallery on Front Street celebrates grand opening

April 29, 20243 Mins Read

White Galleon Gallery sells pieces made by contemporary Canadian artists, as well as historical art, decorative art and fine art; ‘It took a lot of work to get here’

Art critics descended upon downtown Thorold on Friday evening, as White Galleon Gallery on Front St. N celebrated its grand opening.

The exhibition space is the brainchild of Welland resident Patrick Pietruszko, who is finally realizing his dream of becoming a gallery owner.

“It took a lot of work to get here so I’m happy it’s finally happening,” he tells ThoroldToday.

Pietruszko has always had a passion for art.

“I used to do some art,” Pietruszko says. “Then I got more into the art market as far as auctions. I’ve been doing that for a few years now. I wanted to show these kind of contemporary artists. People are supposed to see the art.”

White Galleon Gallery sells pieces made by contemporary Canadian artists, as well as historical art, decorative art and fine art.

“We’re targeting the luxury high-end market,” says Pietruszko.

It took almost two years for Pietruszko to finally find an ideal exhibition space in the empty storefront at 3 Front St. N.

“Everything was either too expensive or with too low ceilings,” he says. “I came across this property here and it kind of checked all the boxes.”

White Galleon Gallery is meant to be so much more than just a gallery.

“Right now we’re selling art from this location but definitely we want exhibitions and bigger shows, as well as auctions in the future,” Pietruszko says. “We’re hoping to keep expanding.”

The power of art is undeniable, according to Pietruszko.

“I just like how it brings people together,” he says. “It’s really unique. Every piece is completely different. Depending on what people like, they’re attracted to different things.”

To celebrate the grand opening, Mayor Terry Ugulini presented Pietruszko with a special certificate on Friday evening.

In a speech, Mayor Ugulini highlighted the plethora of businesses that have recently moved into downtown Thorold.

“We’re hoping to bring the community together,” he told the gathered crowd. “You’re going to be a big part of it. We’re happy you’ve decided to set up business here.”

Pietruszko is excited to have finally opened his doors.

“Everyone is so welcoming here,” he says. “Just come out and check out the art that we have and maybe support the artists we’re showing.”

White Galleon Gallery is located at 3 Front St. N and is open Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
