New gallery in the Hop Market, Worcester, opens its doors

October 17, 20252 Mins Read

Noble and Common in the Hop Market, Worcester, is the creation of Lewis Graham, a fine art graduate of the University of Worcester and a landscape painter.

Mr Graham said: “I’m a landscape painter. I’m really fascinated by contemporary landscape art, and now I have the chance to put on exhibitions which bring together artists whose work really compliments together.”

The gallery’s current exhibition, Hops Vs Art, nods to the venue’s past while exploring its present uses.

He said: “It plays on the history of the Hop Market and the sale of hops, and how that correlates to the art market.

“We’ve got six artists on show right now, and their work is available to buy.”

Currently, the gallery is open by appointment only.

Mr Graham said: “I’m balancing this long-term goal with my day job at the moment, but the aim is to make it financially sustainable so I can be here more often.”

Originally from Halesowen, Mr Graham decided to stay in Worcester after graduating.

He credits his lecturers and time at the university for encouraging his creative ambitions.

He said: “At the University, we had the Art House which is such a massive space.

“I’d go in after hours when my lectures had finished and started painting large pieces.

“I had lots of opportunities to exhibit my artwork at university, entering competitions, and even showing my work at the Worcester Museum.”

His former lecturer, Nathaniel Pitt, said Mr Graham stood out as a confident and driven artist.

Mr Pitt said: “I opened my first gallery in Worcester in 2013.

“I’ve always championed the idea of students self-organising and building their own art scene.

“Lewis has always been a confident and driven artist, and to see him managing a gallery and studio right in the heart of Worcester is incredibly inspiring.

“The city should be proud to have him as part of its cultural fabric.”
