A compilation of works by 79 visual artists are displayed simultaneously on digital screens along Sudirman-Thamrin Street to MRT Stations in Jakarta

The 79th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, celebrated under the theme “Nusantara Baru, Indonesia Maju” (New Archipelago, Advancing Indonesia), on August 17, was not just a commemoration of the past, but a gateway to Indonesia’s future as the nation undergoes three major transitions: the new capital city, a new leadership, and the anticipation of Indonesia Emas 2045 (Golden Indonesia 2045).

This momentous occasion has inspired the creative economy key stakeholders, particularly in the visual arts and outdoor media. A collaboration came about between JICAF (Jakarta Illustration & Creative Arts Fair) and AMLI (Indonesian Outdoor Media Association), with the unveiling of the country’s largest out-of-home art gallery. This massive display features 79 works by Indonesian visual artists, prominently showcased in public spaces with the full backing of industry association and outdoor media owners.

On Independence Day, August 17, 2024, a video compilation of the 79 artworks were aired simultaneously at 17:08 WIB for 45 seconds—symbolising the date of Indonesia’s independence. The video was broadcast on all LED screens and outdoor media across iconic locations in Jakarta, including the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, Sudirman and Thamrin roads, MRT stations, and various other outdoor media nationwide. This synchronised broadcast marked a unique and unprecedented moment of art appreciation, dedicated specifically to the celebration of Indonesia’s independence.

“By displaying the works of 79 artists on LED screens around Jakarta’s most iconic landmarks, we aim to move the boundaries between art and its audience by bringing creativity into public spaces,” said Yoga Prathama, Program Director of JICAF.

Ahmad Mahendra, Director of Film, Music, and Media and Acting Head of the Public Service Agency of Cultural Heritage Museums at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, stated, “This collaboration is a powerful testament to our appreciation for Indonesian art. By bringing the works of our visual artists into public spaces via outdoor media, we not only celebrate independence but also reinforce our national identity, cultural heritage, and creative spirit. The visual art displayed at strategic locations underscores art’s role as a bridge linking contemporary culture with Indonesia’s future as a more advanced and creative nation.”

“This initiative is a fusion of artists creativity and outdoor LED technology to deliver impactful message and beautiful visuals to mark the Independence day,” remarked F. Bernadi, Chairman of AMLI Indonesia.

F. Bernadi also highlighted that the journey towards realising Indonesia Emas 2045 must begin now, with community building and collaboration at the forefront. This initiative serves as a catalyst for involving creative industry players in strengthening collaborative efforts by building stronger relationships with various stakeholders. It also contributes to the growth and professionalism of Indonesia’s creative industry by upholding high standards in visual content delivery.

Indonesia’s largest out-of-home art gallery, celebrating the 79th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence, will be on display from August 17 to August 25 on the LED screens at the HI Roundabout, along Sudirman and Thamrin roads, and at MRT stations. The public is invited to join in the celebration by sharing these artworks on social media using the hashtags #GaleriSeni79Indonesia and #GaleriSeniUntukSemua.
