A tucked-away art gallery in London that is often forgotten happens to be home to one of the world’s greatest art collections.
The Courtauld Gallery is within Somerset House on the Strand and houses the collection of the Samuel Courtauld Trust.
Much of the collection is made of donations and bequests, seeing the likes of drawings, sculptures, and paintings dating from medieval to modern times.
On Tripadvisor, The Courtauld Gallery has an overall rating of 4.7 out of 5 from more than 3,500 reviews and in 2025 earned a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice badge.

The Courtauld Gallery has a large permanent collection featuring some of the most-loved artworks from the Renaissance through to the 20th century.
Some of the world’s most famous art in the gallery includes A Bar at the Folies Bergère by Édouard Manet and Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear by Vincent van Gogh in the LVMH Great Room.
In the galleries, Blavatnik Fine Rooms, artwork on display is Adam and Eve by Lucas Cranach the Elder, The Family of Jan Bruegel the Elder and The Descent from The Cross by Peter Paul Rubens.
Until May 17, The Courtauld Gallery is hosting the Seurat and the Sea exhibition, celebrating the work of Georges Seurat.
The Courtauld holds the largest collection of works by Seurat in the UK, with the current exhibition marking the first dedicated to the French artist in 30 years.
The Courtauld Gallery is open from Monday to Sunday between 10am and 6pm, with ticket prices starting at £12.
Tickets can be booked only via The Courtauld Gallery website and allow you access to the permanent collection and smaller exhibitions.
There are additional charges that apply for temporary exhibitions.

On Tripadvisor, one visitor described the London gallery as a “delight”, sharing: “This small museum presents a unique concentration of masterpieces, and one discovers with shock some of the most famous paintings in the world.
“It is an absolute must and a delight.”
Another guest said, “Really nice collection with much smaller crowds than other museums in London.
“We did not reserve a ticket in advance and were able to get right in.
“Very surprised and impressed with number of works from major artists like Manet, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne & Rubens amongst others”.
