Third art thesis exhibition open through May 11

April 29, 20242 Mins Read

The third thesis gallery show of the year is open now through May 11. It features the work of Kylie Ketelsen of Omaha, Nebraska; Evelyn Holmstedt of Omaha; Mary Baum of McCook Nebraska; Sloan Harper-Marcel of Omaha; Jake Torres of Cozad, Nebraska; Allison Peyton of Fremont, Nebraska; and Emily McDowell of Papillion, Nebraska.

This piece of art features clay cannoli with eyeballs. This piece of art features clay cannoli with eyeballs.A lecture for the exhibition is Sunday, May 5, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Wilson Center Auditorium (814 N. Turner Avenue), followed by a reception in the JDAC.

The JDAC galleries, located at 700 E. 12th Street in Hastings, are open from 9:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and noon to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The galleries, lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Baum’s exhibition ‘Experimental’ is a digital showcase of complex comic compositions. Baum’s work explores a person’s ability to ask for help and how that can affect their life.

Harper-Marcel’s installation “Iseira: A Speculative History” is a mixed-media exploration of visual storytelling and world-building, inviting the viewer to interpret how real life fears and wishes inform the creation of fantastical worlds.

Holmstedt’s exhibition “FEAST” plays with themes of consumption, opulence, decadence, and greed. In their own words, “My flesh and bones will be splayed out for all to consume.”

Ketelsen’s exhibition “Neighboring Solitudes” is a series of oil paintings that create a hazy and dream-like depiction of reality. These paintings explore the topics of loneliness and isolation, especially those created by being in a long-distance relationship.

McDowell’s clay pieces will follow along the path of portraying everyday life and its tasks. An instance of feeling extreme burnout and nothing peaking interest; a feeling of extreme defeat.

Peyton’s work is a collection of oil paintings that explores interpersonal relationships and how fragile human life is. Her work pulls and distorts human skeletons, stripping them bare to encourage self-reflection on the value we put upon our relationships.

Torres’s exhibition “Revenge X Revelry” is a digital comic book. It explores a fantasy world through the eyes of a monster hunter.

Hastings College is a four-year residential college that focuses on student academic and extracurricular achievement. Discover more at hastings.edu.
