This is your only chance to see famous French Moulin Rouge artwork in the UK

April 17, 20242 Mins Read

Opening on Friday 26 April 2024, an exhibition from 19th-century artist, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, promises to dazzle visitors at Victoria Art Gallery in Bath — with colourful depictions of Paris’s fascinating bohemian era.

The Toulouse-Lautrec and the Masters of Montmartre exhibition showcases 100 original posters portraying the social revolution and artistic fervour of 1890s Paris, featuring troupes of cancan dancers and illustrations of the city’s nightlife scene at the turn-of-the-century.

This is the only chance to see Lautrec’s complete collection of 30 posters exhibited together in the UK before it moves to its permanent home at the Musée d’Ixelles in Belgium, following a five-year international tour.

Witness his first poster of the iconic Moulin Rouge, alongside works by other celebrated artists of the time, including Théophile Steinlen’s Tournée du Chat Noir and theatre posters by Jules Cheret.

Entertaining for all ages, family activities bring the art to life for youngsters, as well as feeding their creativity with hands-on crafts available to take part in over the May half term and the summer holidays — plus, a French activity trail to add to the Parisienne experience.

Open to visit from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.30am until 5pm, lunchtime tours take place every Thursday from 1.30pm until 2pm and are free with an exhibition ticket, offering an in-depth, educational take on the artworks.

Please note that the exhibition is open from 6pm until 9pm on Friday 17 May 2024 as part of Bath Festival, with live music and free entry for the evening.
