Wivenhoe cafe and gallery to host new exhibition and workshop

May 8, 20262 Mins Read

The Wivenhoe Cafe and Gallery in East Street opened its doors in August 2024 offering food, homemade cakes, and coffee alongside a rotation of creative exhibitions.

The venue was also part of the four-day Wivenhoe Art Trail at the start of the month.

On Saturday May 9, the venue will be welcoming Michelle Marks, a Clacton-based mixed media artist, for her handmade coasters workshop.

The workshop will last from 2pm to 4pm and the public will create a set of three coasters using wood, paper, collage, sequins, and textiles.

Spaces are limited and the cost is £20 per person.

The gallery is further hosting a new collection from Colchester-based pottery artist’s Hubert Kerry.

Hubert Kerry’s ‘Many Worlds’ exhibition is described as a new chapter in his work which explores imagined terrains and parallel realities.

Venue owner Margo Zawislak-Joannides said: “Hubert created such a unique, one-off collection, and we had such amazing feedback on our art trail – during the four days some of the pieces were sold.

“I thought I did not want anyone to miss this collection, and I wanted people to appreciate his work.”

Margo said Hubert, a Polish national who lives in Colchester, started as a self-taught artist before travelling to Japan to be inspired by Japenese masters in the art of pottery.

The venue is further selling Hubert’s other pottery pieces including tea cups and plates.

The gallery said: “This latest collection introduces sculptural forms that feel at once ancient and futuristic – structures that could belong to distance planets or microscopic ecosystems.

“Through porous surfaces, organic contours, and earthy mineral tones, Kerry creates environments that suggest quiet transformation and the passage of time. Ladders, openings, and clustered forms hint at movement and connections between unseen realms.”

The exhibition is currently on display until June and for more announcements visit the Wivenhoe Cafe & Gallery on Facebook.
