Yuthanan Artifacts Exhibition COMPLEXBOOST Tokyo

August 26, 20241 Min Read

Nicolas Yuthanan Chalmeau has quietly paved his own path in the fashion world over the past few years, blending the sartorial traditions of his French and Thai heritage with the craftsmanship of his new home in Tokyo. His label Sillage has become a cult favorite for its uniquely oversized garments that are crafted in small batches by master artisans across Japan. Clothing, however, is only one aspect of Yuthanan’s creative endeavors, emblematic of a new ceramic exhibition he will unveil at Tokyo’s COMPLEXBOOST gallery.

Artifacts consists of re-purposed ceramics from the Shōwa era, which the French-Thai designer sourced around Japan. Inspired by a 1950s Sony campaign, which saw the multi-national corporation give away branded tea sets to customers, Yuthanan worked with artist Noor Ul Aien, who hand-painted each object with the logos of modern Japanese companies as a way to imbue a second life in these forgotten objects.

At the core of each vessel is “a way to rediscover its beauty, instead of buying new ceramics,” said Yuthanan in a statement. The exhibition will be on view from September 7 to 9, 2024.
